Can I just say that I do NOT think sex is the only reason, nor the best reason, to get married. That's a major problem in Christian pre-marital circles. They say "don't masturbate" and "don't have sex" and then expect everyone to wait for the "right one." In the end, there is a higher divorce rate amongst Christians because they get married just to have sex "licitly." There's got to be a better way.

I dunno'. I visited my husband when he was at Bible college (we were engaged then) and most of the young women I met there were simply there to find a husband. And in the middle of the night, when the profs weren't around, most were pretty honest about being tired of waiting for sex. At 19 and 20, sex can be a pretty HUGE motivator to get married. Certainly it's not the best reason, but I can guarantee that in many cases it's the MAIN one.

Why do you then assume that masturbation isn't God's way of helping people to curb their appetite for sex and maintaining a modicum of self control? I really don't see a verse that says masturbation is sinful in and of itself.

Sex is one of the most powerful gifts that God gives us, and if it's easy for other gifts to cloud our judgement, how much more so for sex? A young man or woman who is able to get release is probably less likely to jump into the first relationship where sex (married or otherwise) is likely to happen.......
